Design Trends That Don’t Look Trendy

Some rooms feel beautiful the moment you walk in, and they still feel beautiful years later.

The secret? Choosing design elements with personality, depth and a connection to how you live.

At Ivory & Olive, we love a bold moment. But we want that moment to belong to you. These are the directions we're loving for spaces that feel luxurious, intentional and anything but predictable.

A bed with presence

A beautiful bedroom starts with a bed that deserves your attention.

Upholstered beds bring softness, but thoughtful shapes and distinctive details turn them into the centerpiece. Bradley's Wayne and Chuck were just released, and they are beyond stunning. Both let you choose a custom fabric, and Chuck's generously padded silhouette makes upholstery part of the architecture of the room.

Imagine rich velvet in chocolate, deep olive or midnight blue, layered with crisp sheets, a textured coverlet and pillows that mix pattern and scale.

The richness comes from the combination. Give each layer a purpose, and leave enough breathing room for the bed itself to shine.

Color of the year

Dunn-Edwards just named French Press Coffee, a rich coffee brown, its 2027 color of the year. Chocolate has officially arrived, and it behaves like a neutral. Think warm, deep and surprisingly easy to live with.

Layers that make a room feel collected

We love the conversation between fabrics: a patterned curtain beside a velvet chair, a beautifully woven rug beneath a custom ottoman, a curved drapery rod that echoes the shape of nearby furniture.

Pattern, pile and a little shine, all in one palette.

These details create rhythm. They give a room the feeling that every choice belongs, even when nothing matches exactly.

And with so many gorgeous, durable fabrics available, beautiful upholstery can suit everyday life. Let your designer carry those materials onto a few custom pieces: a bench, dining chairs or a sofa with an unexpected welt or fringe. That's often where a room becomes distinctly yours.

Trust your designer

This takes trust.

Your designer sees countless collections, finishes and possibilities, and can envision combinations before they're easy for you to picture. Give them room to design beyond your shopping list.

The piece you would never have selected yourself may become your favorite.

Tile with depth and personality

Deep greens, warm browns and inky blues bring wonderful richness to a bathroom. Pair that color with a thoughtful layout, and even a small space can have real presence.

Consider a band of contrasting tile, a checkerboard floor or a familiar tile installed in an unexpected pattern.

Balance the statement with quieter surrounding finishes so the eye has somewhere to rest. Bold design feels most luxurious when it has a little restraint.

Wallpaper that brings the outside in

Florals, leaves, branches and birds offer endless opportunities to bring nature indoors. We especially love botanical wallpaper with expressive scale or a moody background.

It can wrap a powder room, soften a bedroom or give a dining space its own atmosphere. Pull a few colors from the paper into upholstery and accessories to make the room feel connected.

A space made for staying in

A whiskey room, game room, built-in bar or outdoor entertaining corner gives gathering a place of its own.

This is your invitation to play. Try the dark paint, the patterned banquette, the velvet chairs and the statement lighting. A smaller entertaining space can be the perfect place to discover how much you love a richer, moodier look.

Share the restaurants, bars and hotels that have wowed you with your designer. Tell them what you loved: the glow from that special pendant or sconce, the texture, the feeling you got when you walked into the room, the comments your friends made (and how everyone still remembers it to this day!). Then let them translate it into your home.
