A seven-inch majolica bowl in the Compagnia pattern, with oak leaves drawn from the Prosecco vineyards of northern Italy. The leaves are worked in relief, so the green glaze pools deeper in the veining and runs lighter across the raised edges — depth you can feel as much as see.
Majolica is tin-glazed earthenware, a tradition that runs back centuries in Italy. These are made by hand, which means the glaze settles a little differently on every piece and no two bowls are quite identical. That's the argument for handmade over factory ceramic, and it's why a stack of them looks collected rather than bought.
Seven inches across and just over two deep is the genuinely useful size: soup, pasta, a side salad, olives on a table, or berries at breakfast. Shallow enough to serve from, deep enough to eat out of.
