The oyster plate is a genuinely functional object dressed up as a beautiful one. Recessed wells hold each shell level so the liquor stays in it, which is the whole point and the reason this form has been a fixture in New Orleans restaurants for well over a century.
The navy glaze is the right choice for it — deep and saturated, so a raw oyster on the half shell reads bright against the dark ground. Nine and a half inches across, which is enough for a proper serving without crowding a table already holding drinks and sauce.
Oysters are the obvious use, but the wells do just as well with shrimp cocktail, crudités with dip in the center, deviled eggs, or a little caviar service. Between uses it's a beautiful thing to lean on a plate rack or hang on a kitchen wall.
